Towards an Electronic Atlas of Korean History from the Proto-Three Kingdoms to the Establishment of Koryo: A Demonstration of TimeMap™

This exemplar project is a TimeMap™ visualization of the history of Korea in the First millennium AD. The project is a demonstration for the development of a comprehensive electronic atlas. The aim of the atlas is to convey, in an engaging and attractive manner, the growth and transformation of states in the Korean peninsula in their geographical context and to illustrate the development of the first unified Korean state. The atlas can serve as the gateway to a cumulative electronic encyclopedia of the nation’s art, culture and history.

The demonstration map is a collaborative project of a team of Korean historical specialist selected by the National Institute for Korean History and the historical mapping visualization team of the University of Sydney. The NIKH Korean team brings a detailed local knowledge of Korean history and culture. The University of Sydney team brings a large-scale global perspective to the project, combined with the technical expertise and research skills of the Archaeological Computing Laboratory (ACL).
