French and Spanish Missions in North America Accessing the ePublication Maps

French and Spanish Missions in North America maps display information about the missions from years 1550 to 1850. The main interactive map has multiple information layers including data on: Indian tribes associated with the missions, individual missionaries, commodities produced at the missions, and the religious orders associated with each mission. Several additional dynamic maps show the mission data against a background of different historical maps from the David Rumsey Map Collection.

The publication maps include Geographic Information System (GIS) data in shapfile format and historical maps. The TimeMap™ dynamic maps take advantage of the time element of these layers. A dynamic view of the development and closure of the missions over the period from 1550 to 1850 is dramatically demonstrated. For examples of how to use the time features of the dynamic maps, see the User guide. For more information on the data used in the map layers, please see: Data files. The historical maps used as alternate backgrounds are listed on the Map Menu page. A video display of the time sequence from 1550 to 1850, created with TimeMap™, is included.

TMJava Web Browser Version
All of the maps can be viewed using TMJava, the map browser from TimeMap™. The User Guide for the publication gives a good overview of the content and functionality of these maps. For more information on the TMJava browser in general, please see the TMJava User Guide.

For these maps, the browser connects to distributed data through the ECAI Clearinghouse.

TMJava Standalone Browser Version - zzCDL View Map

The primary map with all the mission data layers is also available in a standalone version. This version is similar to the one above, with all components and data served directly from the publication website. The standalone version does not include the historic maps.

zzDownload Standalone Version
The standalone TMJava version of the map browser can be downloaded to run on your local computer or on laptops. It is downloaded as a zip file including the mapspace (navigation control and cartography) and the required datasets.

TMWin Downloadable Version
The publication maps are also available through TMWin, the downloadable map-authoring tool in the TimeMap™ suite of software. The TMWin version is useful for research or advanced learning. Users can modify the cartography of the map, focusing on the data they need for a specific teaching or learning function. In addition, the user can add data from their own collection or other sources to compare to the information in the publication.

Downloading and Installing TMWin and map files
  1. TMWin is available by downloading and installing the TimeMap™ suite of applications. The TimeMap™ website provides information about system requirements, an instruction guide, and software download.
  2. After installing the TimeMap software, query ECAI Clearinghouse Mapspaces through TMWin for "Missions" (mapspace number 20228) and download the publication mapspace. The program will then download and install the files needed to display the primary publication map.
Downloading the GIS data

The shape files used to serve the map data layers can be downloaded independently of the map interface. This data can then be opened with any compatible GIS software tool. For information on the content of these files, see: Data Files
