General Information
Incorporated into the resources of ECAI Iraq are a variety of interactive maps that highlight over 10,000 years of administrative rule, invasions and the establishment of historic sites in the region now known as Iraq. The dynamic features of the map allow users to zoom in and out of a geographic area while selecting a temporal span, thus providing an map based environment for exploring the relationship between geographic location and change over time. Items on the map, like empire boundary shapes and historic sites, are linked to additional information: detailed descriptions, modern and historic images, site plans, artifacts and collections, and book lists, providing a comprehensive view of the historic event or location.

The example below illustrates the ease of accessing web resources linked to a map. Featured is an image of the map of eras and empires for the period 8000 BCE to 3000 BCE, with web resource for the Halaf Period. To view web resources, (1) activate the select arrow (see Toolbar) and click on the map or draw a box around a number of resources on the map. As in the example, (2) a grey screen will appear that shows the map layers that have information for the area you've selected. The number of records for the layer will show in brackets. Click one of the listed resources. If there is more than one record for the layer, (3) a table of attribute data will appear. From this table you can link to the (4) web resource for the record.

The maps of ECAI Iraq are developed and displayed with TimeMap software. This user guide provides directions for using the interactive maps to explore the rich content of ECAI Iraq. For more information about ECAI's technology see: ECAI technology.
