Going Places in the Catalog: Gazetteers
    Gazetteers provide indispensable links between place names and georeferenced locations (specified by latitude and longitude). Since existing gazetteers appeared inadequate for research and teaching in history and culture, we undertook the ECAI Gazetteer Project, including an NSF-funded study leading to content and format standards for gazetteer entries entitled A Multilingual Gazetteer System for Integrating Spatial and Cultural Resources, benefitting considerably from close collaboration with Academia Sinica (Taiwan) and the Alexandria Digital Library project (University of California, Santa Barbara).
