5.0 Beyond the Basics of TMView

Through TMView, datasets with geo-spatial data can be organized and visualized. Data is organized in TMView through the MapSpace Manager window. The TMView Map Window displays the Mapspace data graphically. You have learned how to view maps using the ePublication MapSpaces that you installed and the sample MapSpaces that came with the application download. You can also create your own MapSpaces or download MapSpaces from the ECAI Clearinghouse.

5.1 Downloading MapSpaces from the ECAI Clearinghouse

  1. In TMView, go to MapSpace > Download from Clearinghouse.

  2. TMView will connect to the ECAI Clearinghouse.

Note: Periodic update of the TimeMap software and architecture require users to update the software. If while attempting to connect to the ECAI Clearinghouse you get a message telling you the software is outdated, please go to http://ecai.org/tech/timemap.html.

  3. Insert your selection parameters in the Metadata containing box and click Filter for MapSpaces.

  4. Select the desired MapSpace and click the Download MapSpace button.

  1. Indicate where the MapSpace should be saved and click Download.

The MapSpace will come with pre-defined datasets. You can download some or all of these.

  1. Select the datasets to be included in the download and click Download Datasets.

  2. You will be provided with a status window to show the progress of the downloads.

  3. When the download is complete, the TimeMap MapSpace Datasets
    Download / Find
window will update with green check marks to show which datasets were successfully loaded. Click OK to return to TMView.

The newly downloaded MapSpace with all associated datasets and will appear in the MapSpace list in the MapSpace Manager. If not, go to MapSpace > Browse to the directory where the new MapSpace was downloaded and Open the new MapSpace. In the MapSpace Manager, highlight the new MapSpace name and click Draw Map.

5.2 Downloading Datasets from the ECAI Clearinghouse

For direction on downloading datasets from the ECAI Clearinghouse, please refer to the Viewing Data > TMView > MapSpace Manager > Adding Datasets section of the TMView Help Tool.

5.3 Looking further at the MapSpace Manager

With MapSpaces and datasets loaded in the MapSpace Manager, we can begin to look at the tabs on this page to get more detail about the data we have.

Overview Tab
Graphically shows the geographic extent of each of the MapSpaces listed in the MapSpace Manager window.
The extents of each MapSpace are enclosed by a bounding box.

MapSpace Tab
Allows you to enter metadata about a MapSpace.

Extent Tab
The Extent tab control a variety of functions

Datset Tab
Allows you to review the metadata for a dataset.

Layer
Allows you to control the display of the selected layer.

5.4 Looking further at the Map Window
