4.0 Using TMView

TMView is TimeMap's desktop map authoring and display tool.

4.1 Opening TMView the First Time

You can open TMView by clicking on a MapSpace file, a file with the .tms extension, or by going to Start > Programs > TimeMap > TMView.
  1. The first time you run TMView, the application will ask you if you want to install ESRI's MapObject package. This package is necessary for drawing maps in TMView. Click Yes to install. Note: The MapObjects package needs to be installed once. In some cases, this warning message will appear in subsequent launches of TMView, after the initial installation of the MapObjects package. If you encounter this Warning after you have installed MapObjects, click No.

  2. Once MapObjects is installed, you will then be prompted to restart your computer. Click OK to restart.

  3. Start TMView again, and the Program Configuration Options screen will likely appear. The settings in the screen identify the default directories TMView will use to install map resources when they are downloaded from the Clearinghouse. It also tells TMView where to look for resources already installed on your computer. Until familiar with using TMView, we recommend that you maintain the default settings like those in the screen shot below. You may have to make changes to this screen in order for the settings to match this example.

  4. There are sample MapSpaces that come with the installation of TMView. When TmView is launched, those MapSpaces will appear in the MapSpace Manager screen.

4.2 Loading the ePublication Mapspace(s) in TMView

  1. With TMView open, go to MapSpace > Browse and browse to the directory where TimeMap and the ePublication map resources were installed.

  2. Choose the MapSpace file for the ePublication map that you want to view (the file with the .tms extension) and click Open, or double click the MapSpace file.

4.3 MapSpace Manager

When you are ready to view you map, highlight the MapSpace title or a single dataset within a MapSpace and click the Draw Map button found in the MapSpace Manager.

4.4 The Map Window

The Map Window is where selected maps are displayed.

The Time Bar
Use the Time Bar at the bottom of the Map Window to determine what features in a time enabled map space are visible.

The Legend Panel
The legend panel lists the layers that make up the map. To make a layer "active", simply click on the layer in the legend panel. This places a check mark in the box next to the layer name.

The Map Window Toolbar

We encourage you to explore use of the toolbar elements and how they interaction with the maps. For more information about the functionality of the Toolbar elements in the Map Window, please refer to the Viewing Data > TMView > Map Window section of the TMView Help Tool.
