Editors' Role

At the ECAI meeting in Hong Kong in January 2001, Regional Team Editors' met to more clearly define their role and duties. A provision 'job description' was drafted in Hong Kong and subsequently discussed via e-mail. The duties were adopted at the Editors' meeting in Sydney in June 2001. Editors' responsibilities fall into thee categories - leadership, editorial and structural.

Leadership

  • Recommend to ECAI Central individuals or projects that should be invited to ECAI conferences with an indication of whether ECAI should fund attendance.
  • Recruit new members of ECAI and promote ECAI at conferences.
  • Ensure that all significant regional team projects have something in the Metadata Clearinghouse. This might just be contact details, a brief project description and a web address.
  • Maintain a set of web pages for the regional team. These, where appropriate, will be housed on the ECAI web server.
  • Provide assistance in fund raising. This could be in terms of assisting team members in obtaining letters of support from ECAI Central for their grant applications or, in terms of creating strategic resources, applying for funding on behalf of the regional team.
  • Act as information disseminators between ECAI Central and ECAI Tech and regional team members.
  • Provide regular updates on regional team developments for incorporation into a monthly or bi-monthly ECAI newsletter.
  • Advise ECAI Central on the necessary allocation of resources and funding to support regional team activities.

Editorial

  • Assess the significance of regional team member projects to ECAI and rank them.
  • Assess, validate and rank existing regional team entries in the Metadata Clearinghouse.
  • Procure strategic resources for the regional team. This would probably include a set of base maps. It might include statistical resources such as census data and perhaps historical map coverages. Procurement may range from grant applications to create these resources to obtaining existing digital material from others.
  • Review the existing shortlist of e-publications and advise of any major difficulties with these.
  • Be involved in the selection and validation of future e-publications and assist in the design and visual representations of these publications.

Structural

  • Oversee a discussion list for the regional team.
  • Be a member of a central e-mail discussion list created by ECAI Central for ECAI Editors.
  • Appoint a regional team member to be part of ECAI Tech.
  • Appoint a regional team member to be part of the Cartography Working Group.
  • Take part in regular meetings of Editors' at ECAI conferences and meetings between ECAI Editors' and ECAI Tech.
  • Promote the interests of ECAI Editors' to the Strategic Planning Committee.
