Cultural Heritage Visualization Work Session (May 23, 2 pm) Kevin Mickey Visualization of spatial data is one of the core goals of the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative. TimeMap has been created to provide scholars and researchers with tools that can enable them to view spatial data and associated documents. As ECAI has matured, the needs of the user community have continued to evolve. This work session will define those needs and develop strategies for
pursuing their resolution. Specific components of the session will include
the following.TimeMap - Information will be presented on recent developments
in the TimeMap application suite. These developments include new tools
that support the use of this product as a publishing tool for the Web,
new MapSpace publishing capabilities, improvements that address the need
for TimeMap to be interoperable with other technologies, and new animation The implications of these tools for the humanities community will be discussed.Spatial Visualization and ECAI - The discussion portion of this work session will be focused on two areas. The first of these areas involves defining the data viewing needs of the humanities community. Examples of questions that will be addressed include: "What visualization tools need to be made available to the ECAI community," "What new tools need to be created or improved in order meet the needs of the ECAI community," "What are the priorities for revising and/or developing visualization tools." The second involves the visualization needs specifically associated with digital publishing. Examples of questions that will be addressed include "How do the needs for visualization tools differ between data viewing and digital publishing," "What new tools need to be created or improved in order meet the digital publishing needs of the ECAI community," "What are the priorities for revising and/or developing digital publishing visualization tools."
