Recent developments in TimeMap: Java, XML, Flash and WMS

Ian Johnson
University of Sydney
Australia

This presentation will give an overview of recent developments in the TimeMap software
with particular emphasis on the development of a lightweight Java client
and Java servlet middleware. The new client uses incremental data loading
to speed map display and reduce network traffic, while the new
middleware turns the ECAI clearinghouse into an OGC-compatible Web Map
Server (WMS).

There will also be discussion of the use of XML to define portable metadata,
clearinghouses and interactive maps, and a look at some of the issues of
interoperability between clearinghouses and the datasets they index. The presentation
will conclude with recent work on generating map animation in SWF format
for web delivery.
