| 8. General Transportation
Information
|
Taxis
Taxis can easily be taken and the fares are relatively cheap in Korea.
There are taxi stands all around the city. Taxis can be hailed or the
street, and certain taxis can be called by phone.
There are two kinds of taxis: General and Deluxe.
General Taxis
The fare system is based on both the distance traveled and the time taken.
Fares are 1,300 won for the first 2 km and 100 won for each additional
210m. If the taxi is going less than 15 km per hour, an additional charge
of 100 won per 51 seconds is added. The fare between Kimpo International
Airport and the SNU Kwanak campus will be around 10,000 won depending
on the traffic situation. Fares are 20% higher from midnight until 4 a.m.
Deluxe Taxis
Deluxe taxis, called Mobum taxis in Korean, are black with a yellow light
on the top and the phrase "Deluxe Taxi" written on the side.
They offer a high quality service. Fares are 3,000 won for the first 3
km and 200 won for each additional 250 m or each 60 seconds if the speed
drops below 15 km per hour. The approximate fare between Kimpo and the
SNU Kwanak campus is about 25,000 won. Receipts are issued and there is
no late-night surcharge.
City Buses
There are three types of buses: local, express and community shuttle.
They are numbered according to their routes; however, since their signs
are in Korean, finding the right bus may be quite confusing to a new comer.
It is better to ask Korean colleagues for help in finding the right bus
stops and numbers. Bus fares can be paid with cash, a token, or a bus
card. Bus cards of 20,000, 10,000, and 5,000 won denominations are available
at token booths near bus stops. The bus fare is automatically deducted
from the bus card when it is scanned on the card reader located next to
the driver. Empty cards can be recharged at token booths to be reused.
Local City Buses
Local buses are the most common means of transportation in Seoul as they
are frequent, reliable and one of the most inexpensive way of getting
around in Seoul. Seoul's bus network is quite extensive, and the buses
serve all areas of the city. The adult fare is 500 won regardless of distance.
All buses are marked with numbers and destinations (in Korean only), indicating
their routes and stops within the city. As a part of the plan to improve
the current bus system, local buses are being systematically replaced
with new airconditioned buses.
City Express Buses
City express buses, called Chwasok buses in Korean, are more comfortable
and faster, and are all air-conditioned. They make less frequent stops,
thus travel through congested areas faster. The fare for the city express
buses is 1,000 or 1,300 won.
Community Shuttle Buses
Community shuttle buses have recently become a popular means of transportation
in Seoul. They run on short-distance routes which city buses or subways
do not cover. The fare is between 300 and 400 won but they only take cash.
Subway
There is an excellent, well-developed subway system in Seoul and it is
the most efficient and convenient way to get around the city. Station
names, ticket windows and transfer signs are all clearly marked in English
as well as in Korean. Five subway lines now run through almost every part
of Seoul and its suburbs. A color-coded system is used for routing: red
for Line 1, green for Line 2, orange for Line 3, blue for Line 4, and
purple for Line 5. Subway Lines 6, 7 and 8 are still under construction.
The subway stations are spacious and pleasant, with a variety of art works
on the walls. The fares are inexpensive: one-way tickets to any location
within Seoul cost from 450 to 550 won, including transfers.
