MODELS IN LIMBO: CULTURAL HERITAGE SITES AND WEB DELIVERY

Ian Johnson, University of Sidney

In this paper I will consider some of the conceptual and bandwidth issues raised in delivering information on cultural heritage sites, over the web. In particualr I will consider the importance of a wholistic approach to heritage sites, placing them in spatial, historical and pedagogical context rather than focussing on seductive 3D visualisations. I will argue the importance of providing a coherent narrative and of setting models in a landscape context, as well as facilities for visitors to contribute and/or interact. The discussion will be illustrated with examples from the web as well as recent work on Angkor (Cambodia) and Kythera (Greece).
