Database-driven participatory web mapping of cultural information

Ian Johnson
University of Sydney

The poster will illustrate recent work of the TimeMap Project. We have developed a number of database-driven web map sites, ranging from Asian World Heritage sites (UNESCO) and historical maps (Rumsey Map Collection) through an index of archaeological projects and departments, to contemporary statistical and cultural information for Western Sydney. A key feature of many of these web maps is the ability for users - whether a controlled list or self-registered - to contribute records about new or existing locations, to the backend database online. Management functions allow editorial supervision to control content, the import of large batches of records and repeated updates from third-party sources. The poster will show examples of the web maps, database and management screens, as well as the underlying structures.
