“Latest Developments of the China Historical GIS”
Jianxiong Ge, Fudan University

After the compilation of some nationwide historical maps for some specific years, our project began to compile historical maps based on present provinces from the pre-Qin period to the early 20th century. Fujian and Zhejiang were finished last year. The southern past of Jiangsu including Shanghai, the southern part of Anhui, and Jiangxi, will soon be finished. The compilation of Hunan, and the northern part of Jiangsu and Anhui, is going to be completed later this year. Samples of combinations with different data, such as population, settlements, change of the course of the lower Yellow River, and land utilization, are also components of the project. Experiments with Tang Poems utilizing the historical GIS are being conducted by scholars at the Capital Normal University.
