Assembling the Building Blocks of Southeast Asia GIS Databases

Lawrence W. Crissman
Griffith University, Australia

Most governments in Southeast Asia have produced or are producing GIS spatial data for various aspects of their country’s administrative system, transport infrastructure, land use/land cover, and other environmental measures, often with development bank or other international aid assistance. However, information on those projects is often not easy to find, and the data themselves are usually not readily available for outside use. There are also some commercially available datasets for Southeast Asian countries, as well as some datasets that are regional or world-wide in coverage. This paper will inventory, on a county by country basis, what Southeast Asian GIS datasets are known to exist or to be in production, and whether and how they can be obtained for academic research purposes.
