Abstract

In contemporary conditions there is no easy access to the information on written heritage of Mongolian-speaking peoples which is kept in oriental repositories and archives of various cities on the territory of Inner Asian countries. The immediate access to the like information is largely limited due to a number of organizational and financial hardships. These problems might be partly solved by use of computer technologies and by way of creating databases and electronic catalogues which would be accessible to a wide range of users.

Now we have an opportunity to unite the efforts of experts in the field of informational technologies and scholars-orientologists, create the corresponding coordinated programs and international projects.

A certain amount of experience is accumulated by the scholars of the Center of Oriental Manuscripts and Xylographs of the Institute of Mongolian, Buddhist and Tibetan Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the course of creating informational databases of Mongolian collections which lasted past 10 years. The work was carried on in two major lines, i.e. compilation of electronic catalogues and creation of graphic databases. Different stages and levels of the work will be considered in the paper.
