This presentation outlines new progress in the BGIS project officially started in Aug. 2003 at the University Arizona. It aims to build a searchable relational database of Buddhist monasteries in China by using Geographic Information System (GIS) tools. This database will allow researchers to do quantitative studies about the geographical distribution of Chinese Buddhism, the formation of pilgrimage networks, and their relationship to other Chinese cultural and social institutions. Currently, my project focuses on monasteries in the seventeenth century and the project website is located at http://bgis.coh.arizona.edu. In this presentation, I will report our new progress such as the construction of an elaborate input system and the digitization of new records.
